ABOUT
Fruit in Kind
community art installation project
background‘Fruit in Kind’ was a site specific community art installation project commissioned by the Kuala Lumpur & Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH) for the 1CARES Women’s Art Exhibition, held from 30th May – 3rd June 2014. The 1CARES exhibition concept carried the themes of community, recycling, charity and social consciousness. The installation artists invited to the exhibition were encouraged to make their artworks interactive, temporary, and site specific to the building.

COLLECTING FRUIT AS ART The installation was constructed by stacking old cardboard mandarin orange boxes to make 16 short columns which collectively formed a circle. These boxes, emblazoned on the outside with imagery stereotypical of Chinese culture, were then filled with a diversity of either local Southeast Asian or imported fruits through viewer interaction. Visitors to the exhibition were invited to donate fruit into the boxes, either by bringing their own fruit to place into the boxes themselves, or by money donation to the artist, who would buy fruit the next morning on their behalf.
Fruits were also collected from offices and schools, where each student/worker was invited to bring 1 fruit to school/work on that day. At the end of each day, the fruits would be collected and given to an orphanage. These fruit would be replaced the next day with new donated fruit. Over the 5 day exhibition period, ‘Fruit in Kind’ in the end collected enough fruit for 3 orphanages and 1 home for the disabled. |
Re-installationSince it's first installment, 'Fruit in Kind' has been re-installed 4 times. The aim of re-installation is to give fruit to more people, as well as continue and maintain a consistent supply of donated fruit to the regular beneficiaries of the project; Rumah Kasih Children's Home and Bangsa Ria Home for The Disabled. Each re-installation of 'Fruit in Kind' creates an opportunity for the public to build awareness of the people in our society who can benefit from our help. It is an art installation that also acts as a platform for us to manifest our intentions to help and contribute to those less fortunate, by giving fruit to those who otherwise may not afford it.
